The Brightwell Aquatics Dry Rock Cycle Starter Kit is the end all be all when it comes to hobbyists that want to start a new marine tank out fresh, quickly, properly, and most important, safely. Brightwell Aquatics has been recognized for years as one of the top names for scientifically sound aquarium bacteria starters and additives with one of the most extensive R+D protocols in the industry. In our experience at Two Tides, Brightwell is always our go-to for saltwater additives (specifically relating to bacteria) because of their massive focus on quality control and service.
We wanted to simplify Brightwell's wide range of products by putting together a "Dry Rock Cycle Full Starter Kit" that combines one of their most successful lines of MicroBacter bacteria cultures. The purpose of this kit is to provide hobbyists a no-questions-asked solution to starting and cycling their new marine FOWLR or reef tanks correctly, quickly, and safely. We at Two Tides believe that the health of our aquariums is like the health of our bodies. If we start things off right, then progression and maintenance is much easier than if we have to fix problems down the road.
The Brightwell Aquatics Dry Rock Cycle MicroBacter Live Bacteria Full Starter Kit includes...
- (1) 60mL Bottle of QuikCycl
- ...to dose a generous amount of food (ammonia) for your bacteria cultures to feed on as soon as they enter the tank, minimizing bacteria loss and maximizing surface area coverage.
- (1) 125mL Bottle of MicroBacter Start XLM
- ...to establish a healthy and specifically blended live culture of both aerobic (ammonia and nitrite reducing) and anaerobic (nitrate reducing) bacteria to your aquarium that immediately begins the cycling process.
- (1) 500mL Bottle of MicroBacter Clean
- ...to add an individual mix of bacteria that will fight off nuisance algae to all but skip the "ugly phase" of tank cycling where algae grows on your rock structures and sand, and leave a very fresh clean looking rockscape and sand bed.
These products are dosed into your aquarium in this specific order: QuikCycl, then MicroBacter Start XLM, then MicroBacter Clean (the same as above). After your cycle is complete, we recommend continuing to dose MicroBacter Clean weekly to keep nuisance algae away. Do this for a few months until you're confident that your tank is fully cycled.
Brightwell does an excellent job at giving very detailed, thorough, and full instructions and guidelines of how to precisely use their products, as well as any pitfalls to avoid. We highly recommend you to read any and all instructions both on the Two Tides pages linked above, and on the Brightwell Aquatics website before making a decision to add anything to your tank. Education and planning are keys here, and we want to be sure that you have both before you start your cycle.
The current aquarium system (tank and sump) rating for 125mL of NitroBacter Start XLM is 100 gallons. If your aquarium system is larger than 100 gallons, purchase some additional MicroBacter Start XLM to meet the size requirements of your system.
Please note that this Brightwell Dry Rock Cycle Starter Kit is intended to be used with DRY ROCK and DRY SAND. Most aquarium bacteria and certainly those in MicrōBacter Start XLM and MicroBacter Clean live on substrates, that is, they attach themselves to surfaces of rocks, piping and any other surfaces that are available. Live Rock and Live Sand has bacteria already present on them that will compete for the same space to colonize as the bacteria culture in MicroBacter Start XLM, and the live rock / sand bacteria most likely is not optimized to remove ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates like the culture in MicroBacter Start or MicroBacter Clean. Using live rock and live sand will lengthen your cycle by 3-5x, which defeats the point of having live rock / sand to start with. So use Dry Rock and Dry Sand with this kit wherever possible.
