In this video, Paul from Red Sea walks us through all of the features of the Red Sea RKS, including Performance, Quiet Operation, Quick Maintenance and Cleaning, and Multi-Position Assembly. Thanks Paul!
The RSK Reefer Skimmer Series is the most high-tech skimmer system currently available, including multiple features that we believe should simply be included standard with all protein skimmers because of their effectiveness.
We outlined the main features of this skimmer in the "Specs" tab, but the uniqueness of the RSK Skimmer can be summarized in three words...Ease. Of. Use.
For example, the Foam View Window. Why this hasn't been implemented until now is beyond us. We've been trying to look through black skimmate to dial in skim levels for years wondering why there wasn't a small porthole that we could see through to what the actual level of the foam was, instead of trying to contort our head around at odd angles to try and find a clear spot to look through. And if we don't have visual marking indicators on our Skim Level Dial or forgot to put them in ourselves, we are forced to go through this rather annoying process every time we do maintenance cleanings (making us less likely to do them). Thank you Red Sea for finally delivering on this simple yet invaluable feature that makes the life of a reefer that much easier.
A piece of the skimmer that helps tremendously with simple maintenance is the INCLUDED Manual Neck Cleaner. Yes, we emphasized "Included", because there are a few skimmers out there that do offer a neck cleaning solution, but they are separate purchases, adding a price addition to an already fairly pricey piece of reef equipment. It's just a nice touch that it comes standard. Keeping the neck of our skimmer clean also rapidly increases performance (by as much as 40%) because the bubbles are allowed to flow and move properly, where if they get met with gunk along the way, they can slow down and break before reaching the collection cup, effectively wasting foam and not getting our full money's worth out of our skimmer.
We could go on about the pros of these skimmers for hours, and honestly, there's not much to say about improvements. One thing we'd really love to see however is a slightly smaller / slimmer version of these skimmers. While it is a high-performance skimmer, compared to other standard line skimmers the cone-shaped body is a bit wide at the bottom. The body size is still more than manageable if the skimmer has its own dedicated chamber, but for those of us who want to run additional equipment (like media or bio reactors) or just don't like the look of a cluttered filtration system (for aesthetic, flow, and cleanliness purposes), then a "Slim" option that is 1 - 1.5" smaller in diameter would be ideal.
All in all though, the RSK Series is one of the most solid skimmer options out there, and once we experience the Ease of Use of some of the RSK's features, it admittedly becomes very tough to live without them.
